Today we talked to an expert on visual literacy. Lissa talked to our whole class about the importance of visual literacy. I felt opposed to visual literacy, but after hearing the connections that visual literacy has to teaching it made me look at it in a different way. Apart from these connections its such an amazing idea to start teaching at low levels in elementary schools. My question was what grade would visual literacy be the most effective. The answer that i got was more than I wanted and i am grateful for.
ANSWER:Its more effective to think about where you start, not where you should be ending, if you don’t teach it all the way through, it wont be effective. lessons as low as grade 3, CRAP, but you could probably teach it even lower, lower even to 1st. I advocate it integrated into all classes, not just one.
As I said before I felt negative about visual literacy but only because I don't find sketch-noting important, but this answer and this interview made me look at Visual Literacy in a new light. My career option is being a teacher specially a preK - second grade, and hearing her say that this could be taught to kids at young ages makes me feel good that I´m learning something that one day I hope to teach with joy.
